Meet Vivian Maier's biographer, Pamela Bannos, who will talk about her new book Vivian Maier: A Photographer's Life and Afterlife. Bannos's biography is described by the Chicago Tribune as “groundbreaking” and an “exhaustively researched and engrossingly written examination of the life and work of the enormously talented and intensely private American photographer.” Copies of Bannos’s book will be available for sale and signing after the talk.
About Vivian Maier
Street photographer Vivian Maier (1926-2009) became famous for her images of urban and suburban life after her death. Her photos most often featured ordinary people, including those who lived on the margins of society, going about their daily routines. In the 1950s, she came to Chicago and began working as a nanny for families in Wilmette and Highland Park. Many photos are of children, an interest that probably developed out of her profession as a nanny. During the years she lived in Wilmette (1967 – 1973), she shot scenes of suburban life and of the Raymond family for whom she worked. There is an especially extensive series of photos of people at Wilmette beach and Gillson Park.
By all accounts, Maier was a deeply private, unconventional person who did not share her work. Today, she is a celebrated artist, whose work has been compared to other legendary American photographers such as Diane Arbus and Walker Evans.
